How to work out a tip

A tip is a percentage of the bill. To find it, multiply the bill by the tip rate divided by 100, then add it on. Splitting is just dividing that grand total by the number of people.

The method
each = bill × (1 + tip% ÷ 100) ÷ people

Worked example

$60 bill · 18% tip · 2 people
tip = 60 × 0.18 = $10.80
total = 60 + 10.80 = $70.80
each = 70.80 ÷ 2 = $35.40

How much should you tip?

Customs vary by country. In the United States, 18–20% is standard for table service, with 15% on the low side and 25% for something exceptional. In much of Europe a service charge is often already included, and a small round-up is plenty. The presets cover the common range; the custom field takes anything.

Tip on the total or before tax?

Both are done. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is technically the "correct" convention, but many people simply tip on the total for ease. If it matters to you, enter the pre-tax subtotal as the bill. For the underlying maths, the percentage calculator covers every variation.

Tip & split FAQ

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100. For an 18% tip on $60: 60 × 0.18 = $10.80. Add that to the bill for the total.

Add the tip to the bill, then divide the grand total by the number of people. A $70.80 total split two ways is $35.40 each.

In the US, 18–20% is standard for good table service, 15% is modest, and 25% is generous. Elsewhere a service charge may already be included, so check the bill first.

Traditionally the tip is on the pre-tax subtotal, but many people tip on the full total for simplicity. Enter whichever figure you prefer as the bill.

It shows the exact per-person share to the cent. If you want round numbers, adjust the tip slightly or round up when you pay.
