Metric and US measures

One litre is 1,000 millilitres and about 0.264 US gallons. A US gallon is 3.785 litres, split into 4 quarts, 8 pints or 16 cups. Note that these are US liquid measures; UK imperial pints and gallons are larger.

1 US gallon in litres
1 × 3.785 = 3.785 litres

Watch the gallon

The biggest trap is the gallon: a US gallon is 3.785 litres but an imperial gallon is 4.546. This tool uses US liquid units throughout, so if you are working from a UK recipe or fuel figure, keep that in mind. Everything runs through the litre as a base.

This converter uses US liquid gallons, 3.785 litres. An imperial gallon is larger at 4.546 litres.

A US cup is about 237 ml. A metric cup is 250 ml, so recipes can differ slightly.

Multiply litres by 0.264 for US gallons, or divide by 3.785.

These are liquid measures. Dry pints and quarts are a different, larger size and are not covered here.
